Problem Solving in Room 7

Room 7 are working hard on showing they can use more than one strategy to answer addition and subtraction problems. They are also looking at how they read word problems and find the basic idea or strategy - what does the problem what me to find out? Students have to work in small groups and the key is the sharing and talking students do. They need to be able to explain their ideas, strategies and agree. Here are examples of their first sharing session.

Often students needs to be reminded to make things simple. Two good strategies they are remembering to use are reversibility (If a problem is hard as a subtraction problem turn it into an addition problem i.e. 234 - 150 = ? could be written as 150 + ? = 234) and using number lines.

Using materials.
Having the chance to share knowledge.
Sharing ideas and writing down their thinking.
Being focused on the task.

Week 6 Homework

Well done to those who made sure they showed pride in their presentation. I was very impressed with the way students are starting to ask questions about who they are. I am also impressed with the effort some are putting in and their are developing an amazing publishing book them can be proud of.

Sasha's Awesome Homework

This week is the final piece of homework on our current topic. This week I would like students to create an 'All About Me' mini project/poster. On this page I would like students to tell the world who they are, what they like or dislike and their future dreams. They can use bits and pieces from their previous homework.

In this piece I also want parents and guardians to write a future wish for their child.

Some ideas that could go into their mini project:

  • Favourites and dislikes (Sports teams, music, art, movies, colours, fashion, shops, etc).
  • Hobbies.
  • Sports.
  • Family.
  • Friends.
  • Goals for 2014.
Some presentation points for students to remember:
  • Mr Dufty likes colour and fun so make sure you make your work stand out!
  • We do not publish in pencil. Pencil is for drawing and maths.
  • Spelling, grammar and punctuation is important so check these before you publish.
  • Get someone to check before you hand it in.
Homework hints for Room 7:
  • Start it on Monday - don't leave it to Thursday night. Your teacher can tell!
  • You must read for at least 5 minutes every night to an adult. This must be signed by an adult - no excuses; unless you live in a cave with no books, by yourself and on an island!
  • Practise the spelling words you don't know - why practice the easy ones!!??
  • Even if you don't finish your homework your homework book must come to school on Friday. Don't leave it at home. You all know I won't forget!!

What has been happening in Room 7?

Well done Tangaroa for your fantastic win last week. Every week students are working hard and showing their Excellence, Pride and Spirit. They earn points in their classrooms that go towards winning the House Shield and an end of term treat.

If you have Google account (gmail, google calendars, etc.) then you can add messages below.

Week 5 Homework

Well done to the students who completed their homework to the best of their ability. It great seeing you showing great care and pride in your work.

This week you are to create a presentation about your name. Find out why you have your christian name, middles name(s) and where does your surname come from. You might also be able to find your family crest.

This is my Scottish family crest.

Mr Dufty's name.

Hamish John Dufty

Hamish is Scottish for James. My mum always wanted a Scottish name as we are very proud of our Scottish ancestry.
My middle name is John. This is a common English name and is the middle name that every eldest son has. My father and my Grandfather have John as as their middle name.
Dufty is english. It was originally spelt Doughty but was changed to Dufty. There are very few Dufty's around and often it is misspelt as Duffy which is Irish.

Recorded as Douty, Dowty, Doughty, Dofty, and Dufty, this interesting surname is English. It was originally a nickname for a powerful or brave man, especially a champion jouster`, and derives from the Olde English pre 7th Century word "dohtig" " meaning valiant or strong. The surname dates back to the mid 13th Century, (see below) and early examples of recordings include William Doughty in the Register of the Freemen of Leicester in te year 1301, and John Dughti in the Register of the Freemen of York in 1314. Later examples taken from the early surviving church registers of the city of London include Alys Dowtye who married William Style at St. Margaret, Westminster, on January 23rd 1547, Henry Doughty who was christened on December 28th 1562 at St. Martin, Pomeroy, London and Elizabeth Dofty who married James Franncis on February 13th 1575 at St. Augustines, Watling Street. John Doughty (1598 - 1672) although a religious divine, joined the cavalier forces of King Charles 1st in 1642. He was on the restoration made prebendary of Westminster Abbey in 1660. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Douti. This was dated 1247, in the Assize Rolls of Bedfordshire, during the reign of King Henry 111rd of England, 1216 - 1272. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was sometimes known as the Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Gabi's name.

Gabrielle Margaret Joan Dufty

Gabi's christian name is Gabrielle. We were always going to have Gabriel or Gabrielle has our child's name. It also has links to a very close friend of ours.
She has two middle names. Margaret is my mother and my nana's middle name. Joan is my nana's christian name. They are both very important people in our lives and we wanted their names to carry on for future generations.

Have fun with your presentation and use only one page.
