Problem Solving in Room 7

Room 7 are working hard on showing they can use more than one strategy to answer addition and subtraction problems. They are also looking at how they read word problems and find the basic idea or strategy - what does the problem what me to find out? Students have to work in small groups and the key is the sharing and talking students do. They need to be able to explain their ideas, strategies and agree. Here are examples of their first sharing session.

Often students needs to be reminded to make things simple. Two good strategies they are remembering to use are reversibility (If a problem is hard as a subtraction problem turn it into an addition problem i.e. 234 - 150 = ? could be written as 150 + ? = 234) and using number lines.

Using materials.
Having the chance to share knowledge.
Sharing ideas and writing down their thinking.
Being focused on the task.
