Homework Week 5 - Pepeha

Pepeha

Your next homework challenge is to share something about your family. You are to write and share your own pepeha or mihi. We have talked in class about how you can do this. If you have another language you use at home you can use this – just write a translation for the class. It can be written in english but remember that a pepeha tells me about who you are and your whakapapa. So find out places or landmarks of importance to your family or culture. Ask for help from people who know. If you are Maori you might already have a pepeha framework that your family uses.

Your pepeha can be written in another language.

Mr Dufty's Rules for Research.

  • Don't use Google!! Mum, Dad and your family should be the first people you speak to. Every family has someone who is a family historian!
  • Make your presentation fun BUT full of information!
  • Don't copy what you find - write in your own words! This is stealing!!
  • One page only - so PLAN before you put it in your book!!!!
  • Get Mum or Dad to check that you have answered all the questions. Ask them for some help as they will know lots of stuff!

Amazing Learning in Room 7

Over the past two weeks Room 7 has been focusing in what is Excellence, Pride and Spirit. We have been investigating and gathering as many examples as we can. As a part of our study on "Who Are We?" Room 7 have really focused on what groups we belong to.

It has been great hearing the students of Room 7 come in a share all the little and big facts they are learning about themselves and their whakapapa. Awesome stuff kids and parents.

Here is what Tehya Cameron has done. Great stuff Tehya!

What is showing Spirit?

What is showing Pride?

What is showing Excellence?

What groups do we belong to?

Homework Week 4

Well done on last weeks homework. What an amazing effort by everyone.

This weeks homework challenge is to share something about your culture.

What culture or cultures do your family have links with?

Share information about the culture or cultures you have links to.

These could be facts about the country, flag, customs and language. You might have more than one culture!

You must have at least ten amazing facts. Try at get facts that are specifically about your family. This could be information about the regional they are from, customs and traditions, important landmarks. Your name might even be a link to your ancestry.

As I have mentioned before I have Scottish and English ancestry. What have you found out?

Let me share some information about my whakapapa.

I have connections to Scotland and England. My Mum’s family are Scottish and my Dad’s family are English. My Mum’s family are MacErlich, from the major MacDonald clan and the MacErlich’s come from Inverness. MacErlich was apparently kicked out of the MacDonald clan for stealing sheep!
For years we thought my Dad’s family were on the Welsh side of the Wales / England border. Then I also found out that the spelling of Dufty had changed. It used to be spelt Doughty with the ‘gh’ making the ‘f’ sound. Unfortunately there is very little known about my father's family – they have a dark past!

Homework Week 3

Welcome to Week 3. This is a busy week. We start our swimming lessons (everyday), our Kapa Haka starts (Wednesday) and the Champions Club (Bible in Schools team) start on Tuesday. This weeks homework task has gone home.

In class we are full on into our reading, writing and maths. In reading this week we are focusing on writing full summary of our stories. In maths we are focusing on being able to write numbers in word form and show our knowledge of place value. In writing we are starting to write Autobiographies. During Inquiry time we are exploring our school values and expectations.

All About Me task.

This week students have to set some goals and share a few facts about themselves. Mr Dufty is looking forward to seeing what students can do with their presentation (showing Pride) and completing the task on time (showing Excellence).

  1. Parents are to set a learning goal for this term.
  2. Students are set their own learning goal for the term.
  3. Share three facts about themselves.
Points to remember:

Your Homework book is not a scribble book - it shows your best independent learning.
Plan before you publish.
Show Mum and/or Dad before it comes to school on Friday.

Welcome to Room 7

What a great start to the year. This is going to be a very busy term with a lot of things happening.

Please check out our class blog and school facebook / website for extra information. This is where a lot of information about our class and school will be.

Stationary
I would like all students to have their stationary as soon as possible or at least by the end of this week. It is essential that we start setting up and using our books.
Swimming
We will be having structured swimming lessons during school time in Term One and Swimming Instructors in during weeks 3-5. Please check and make sure your child has their togs and towel every day. With our poor drowning statistics in New Zealand it is important our children can swim and stay safe.
Homework
Homework will start in Week 3.

What is happening in Room 7 this week?

Writing
This week we are working on writing complete paragraphs and making sure they have our capital letters and full stops where they should be. We are also looking at adding detail and extra description into our writing. We will start to add writing on to our class writing blog.
Reading
For reading this week we are focusing on being about to add detail when summarising a story. We are learning to write information we have read into our own words and make sure it the important details of who, what, where, when, why and how.
Maths
We are looking at using different stratgies for addition and subtraction and revisiting Place Value. We are also starting to focus on our times tables.
Topic – Our School Values and Expectations
This week we will be revisiting our school values (Excellence, Pride and Spirit) and our expectations. These expectatiuon are seen around the school.

Have a great week.
