Week 5 Homework

Well done to the students who completed their homework to the best of their ability. It great seeing you showing great care and pride in your work.

This week you are to create a presentation about your name. Find out why you have your christian name, middles name(s) and where does your surname come from. You might also be able to find your family crest.

This is my Scottish family crest.

Mr Dufty's name.

Hamish John Dufty

Hamish is Scottish for James. My mum always wanted a Scottish name as we are very proud of our Scottish ancestry.
My middle name is John. This is a common English name and is the middle name that every eldest son has. My father and my Grandfather have John as as their middle name.
Dufty is english. It was originally spelt Doughty but was changed to Dufty. There are very few Dufty's around and often it is misspelt as Duffy which is Irish.

Recorded as Douty, Dowty, Doughty, Dofty, and Dufty, this interesting surname is English. It was originally a nickname for a powerful or brave man, especially a champion jouster`, and derives from the Olde English pre 7th Century word "dohtig" " meaning valiant or strong. The surname dates back to the mid 13th Century, (see below) and early examples of recordings include William Doughty in the Register of the Freemen of Leicester in te year 1301, and John Dughti in the Register of the Freemen of York in 1314. Later examples taken from the early surviving church registers of the city of London include Alys Dowtye who married William Style at St. Margaret, Westminster, on January 23rd 1547, Henry Doughty who was christened on December 28th 1562 at St. Martin, Pomeroy, London and Elizabeth Dofty who married James Franncis on February 13th 1575 at St. Augustines, Watling Street. John Doughty (1598 - 1672) although a religious divine, joined the cavalier forces of King Charles 1st in 1642. He was on the restoration made prebendary of Westminster Abbey in 1660. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Douti. This was dated 1247, in the Assize Rolls of Bedfordshire, during the reign of King Henry 111rd of England, 1216 - 1272. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was sometimes known as the Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Gabi's name.

Gabrielle Margaret Joan Dufty

Gabi's christian name is Gabrielle. We were always going to have Gabriel or Gabrielle has our child's name. It also has links to a very close friend of ours.
She has two middle names. Margaret is my mother and my nana's middle name. Joan is my nana's christian name. They are both very important people in our lives and we wanted their names to carry on for future generations.

Have fun with your presentation and use only one page.

Kiwican.

Today we started Kiwican. We looked at we work together and respect others.

Kiwican. Why have rules?

Today we looked at what are rules and why we have rules. Room 7 had to reflect on how whether they  play fairly and whether they are fair by teaching the rules when new people meter a game. They talked about the consequences of when someone does not play by the rules. They also discussed how we have rules at home and the classroom as well. Matua Rocky ask Room 7 about how people not following the rules impact on the enjoyment and learning of others.
Student had invent a game and share the rules. An important part of playing fairly is thinking about how we speak to each other!

Week 4 Homework

Excellence, Pride & Spirit

This week you are going to look at our school values and share how you show these values at home, in the community and at school.

You are also to ask Mum or Dad, Nanna or Pop or someone close what other value you believe Ebbett Park School should use and why?

You can present it as a brainstorm with words and pictures, paragraphs with headings or in columns.

Use awesome colours and funky fonts. You can do it on the computer and you could e-mail to me so I can print it off for you.

Well done Michelleyah and Rihari who were recognised in assembly for their behaviour this week.

Week 3 Homework

Students will come home with a homework book. Inside there are a set of tasks to complete.

Spelling: Students will have a list of words to learn during the week. Find a quiet place and help them find the best way for them to learn the word sounds and spelling rules. They don't need to learn the words they already know.

Reading: Students are required to read out loud to a parents or guardian every night for 5-10 minutes. Students who are involved in the home reading programme have books given to him by Mrs Kyle. The remainder of students are to select their own reading material. Students can read the newspaper, an article from the internet or their favourite book. If parents would like reading material for their child please ask.

Inquiry: Your first challenge is to share something about your family. You are to write and share your own pepeha. We talked in class about how you can do this. If you have another language you use at home you can use this – just write a translation for the class. It can be written in english but remember that a pepeha tells me about who you are and your ancestry. So find out places or landmarks of importance to your family. Ask for help from people who know. You can publish by hand or on the computer.

Let me share some information about my whakapapa.

I have links to Scotland and England. My Mum’s family are Scottish and my Dad’s family are English. My Mum’s family is MacErlich, from the major MacDonald clan and the MacErlich’s come from Inverness. My Great great parents travelled from Scotland to New Zealand on the boat HMS Ruapehu. For years we thought my Dad’s family were on the Welsh side of the Wales / England border. Then I also found out that the spelling of Dufty had changed. It used to be spelt Doughty with the ‘gh’ making the ‘f’ sound. Unfortunately there is very little know about my fathers family – they have a dark past!

Welcome to 2014

What a great start to the year. The students are starting to settle in and it is great seeing them with their stationary and togs. I would like all students to have their stationary by the end of this week. It is essential that we start setting up and using our books.

Welcome to Manaea, Zavier and Trinity. Welcome back to Dilpreet.

Swimming
We will be having structured swimming lesson during school time in Term One. Please check and make sure your child has their togs and towel every day. With our poor drowning statistics in New Zealand it is important our children can swim and stay safe.

Homework
Homework will start next week.

Camp

Information will start going home about Camp Whakamaru. Camp is the 2nd- 4th of April and will be for our year 5 & 6 studnets only. We will require the support of at least six adults for camp. The payment for camp is on the stationary list that went home and is $100.
